Learning to sing takes good information; good observational skills and feedback from a teacher; and patience, discipline and detailed repetition of muscular patterns by the student. All these articles and videos give useful ideas, but it is only by working through all of them that the student can form a true picture of what is involved in singing.

1. Introduction (not currently online)

2. How the voice works – a useful conceptual model for how the singing voice works – a combination of physical mechanics (‘the machinery’), and the mental-emotional process that drives it. Watch >>

3. Aligning the neck for singing – demonstrating the different sounds produced depending on the position of the neck. Watch >>

4. Relaxing throat and jaw – showing how true vocal power comes from relaxing the throat and keeping neck muscles soft and not tensed. Watch >>

5. Posture and singing – how opening and lengthening the spine affects the singing voices. Watch >>

6. Lip rolls: do’s and don’ts – this is a useful exercise, but not as easy at it looks. All the demo videos I have found on the web give the wrong advice on how to do them, so I have created this video to put the record straight. Look out for later videos in my series that teach how to improve abdominal breath support and free jaw, lips and tongue. Watch >>

7. Freeing the jaw – Part 1 – this shows how different positions and movements of the jaw can have a positive or negative impact on the voice. Watch >>

8. Freeing the jaw – Part 2 – six simple techniques on how to free the jaw. Watch >>

9. Freeing the neck – six simple techniques on how to free the neck. Watch >>

10. Freeing the tongue – Part 1 – How the behaviour of the tongue affects the voice, plus two exercises for freeing tongue (without vocalising). Watch >>

11. Freeing the tongue – Part 2 – tongue exercises while vocalising – the ‘tongue stretch’ and the ‘tongue curl’. Watch >>

12. Breathing (1) – 20 Elements – Good breathing technique affects at least 20 different elements in singing. Watch >>

13. Breathing (2) – Learning breathing technique – Four key principles on how to be a successful learner of breathing technique for singing. Watch >>

14. Breathing (3) – How not to breathe for singing – It is useful for singers to be able to recognise two of the most common faults in breathing technique, so that they can check their own singing technique for problems. Watch >>

15. Breathing (4) – What the diaphragm can (and cannot) do – The diaphragm (pronounced ‘die-a-fram’) is very important in singing – but many singers and singing teachers are misinformed how it works, and, by mistake, are giving out wrong information. This video is intended to clear up the confusion. Watch >>

16. Breathing (5) – What the abdominals do – Abdominal muscles work in partnership with the diaphragm to manage airflow and pressure in singing. Watch >>

17. Breathing (6) – Developing abdominal support – Abdominal breathing exercises for singers. Watch >>

18. Breathing (7) – Stabilising ribs and diaphragm – Diaphragm breathing exercises for singers. Watch >>
